Small Business Rate Relief can turn a valuation threshold into a very real cash question.

In England, the familiar rateable-value bands still matter for qualifying small businesses.

The headline bands

GOV.UK states that qualifying businesses can receive 100% Small Business Rate Relief when the rateable value is £12,000 or less. Relief tapers between £12,001 and £15,000. Above £15,000, the normal SBRR relief is no longer available.

Why 2026 can sting

A revaluation that moves a property across £12,000 or £15,000 can change relief as well as the underlying valuation. That can make the bill feel as if it jumped faster than the rateable value.

Supporting Small Business Relief

If you lost some or all of specified relief because of the 1 April 2026 revaluation, Supporting Small Business Relief may apply. See the separate guide.
